One Bloor West

Behind the Steel: Rebar Detailing at One Bloor West

At the corner of Yonge and Bloor, Toronto’s most renowned intersection, rises One Bloor West — an 85-storey tower climbing to 308.6 metres, officially making it Canada’s first supertall skyscraper. Designed by Foster + Partners with Core Architects and developed by Mizrahi Developments, the tower represents not only the tallest building in the country but also a bold step in architectural ambition for Toronto’s evolving skyline.

One Bloor West combines luxury retail, a five-star Andaz hotel, and more than 470 residential suites, creating a vertical community of international caliber. Its exterior is defined by a structural bronze exoskeleton — an expressive system of mega-columns and diagonal bracing that is both visually striking and structurally essential. This framework allows the building to achieve its soaring height while giving the tower a distinct silhouette that stands apart from anything else in Canada.

The site itself carries historical significance. Before The One began to rise, this corner housed heritage structures dating back to the late 19th century. Portions of these facades, including the William Luke Buildings, have been carefully preserved and integrated into the podium, allowing the project to fuse Toronto’s past with its future. In doing so, One Bloor West doesn’t erase history — it elevates it, embedding heritage into the foundation of a new architectural statement.

For Rebar Enterprises, contributing to a project of this magnitude underscores the role of reinforcement detailing in making such visions possible. The combination of height, slenderness, and unconventional structural design required detailing of the highest precision, ensuring every bar of steel aligned seamlessly with both engineering demands and architectural intent. Behind the glass, bronze, and concrete is a lattice of reinforcement that allows this landmark to rise confidently above the city.

When complete, One Bloor West will redefine Toronto’s skyline for generations. It is not only Canada’s tallest building but also a symbol of its architectural maturity — a daring blend of art, engineering, and ambition. At Rebar Enterprises, we take pride in shaping these unseen structures, ensuring that every landmark stands enduring, one bar, one drawing, one project at a time.
