Behind the Steel: Rebar Detailing at Forma – Gehry’s Toronto Masterpiece

Toronto’s skyline is entering a new era with Forma, Frank Gehry’s bold return to his hometown. Rising as two twisting towers — 84 and 73 storeys — the west tower will soar 308 metres, making it the tallest Gehry-designed residential building in the world. More than 2,000 homes, retail, and a new OCAD University campus will anchor the project as both a work of art and a centrepiece of Toronto’s downtown. For Rebar Enterprises, Forma represents not just another high-rise, but a chance to demonstrate how precise detailing supports architecture that challenges convention.

Forma is unlike a typical tower. With its sculptural shapes and reflective façade, the project demanded reinforcement detailing of exceptional accuracy and adaptability. As Project Manager Hassan Ahmed reflected, “I’m proud that I got to be part of building one of Toronto’s most iconic towers. Seeing the drawings I worked on come to life in a 308-metre building designed by Frank Gehry is something I’ll always carry with me.” His team translated complex engineering designs into clear, practical rebar drawings that ensured construction proceeded without delays or costly rework.

The distinctive curves and non-standard forms required extra care at every stage. Hassan explained, “It wasn’t a standard box tower, so every detail needed extra attention. I turned complex engineering designs into practical rebar drawings that made the structure buildable.” When the first sections of the tower rose exactly as planned, it became clear that the detailing approach was working seamlessly. Even when late design changes arrived, the team’s coordination ensured updates were delivered quickly and efficiently, keeping construction on track.

For the client, the project demonstrates that Gehry’s vision is not only aspirational but achievable. For the city, it introduces a landmark that blends art and engineering into one unforgettable silhouette. “It will stand for decades as a piece of art and engineering combined — something people will instantly recognize when they look at downtown Toronto,” Hassan said. He summed up the experience in a single line: “Bringing a sculpture to life, one rebar drawing at a time.”

Forma is a statement of what’s possible when innovative design meets precise execution. Behind the glass, steel, and sculpted lines lies the hidden framework of reinforcement carefully planned and detailed by Rebar Enterprises. For us, it’s another example of how every bar, every drawing, and every project we deliver strengthens not just buildings, but the skylines they define.
